Energy Observer, the first hydrogen-powered, zero-emission vessel to be self-sufficient in energy, will make a stopover in Fortaleza from November 16 to 24, at the Marina Park Hotel. As part of her 6th year of a global expedition, this will be the first time of Energy Observer in South America. Including guided visits and exhibits that focus the energy transition, the event is organized by Qair with support from the Ceará State government, Fortaleza Mayor Hall, CSI, Accor Group and other sponsors such as Air Liquide and Toyota.
Commanded by a crew of sailors, engineers, journalists and scientists, the laboratory vessel – which is entirely powered by a mix of renewable energies and produces its own hydrogen from sea water – works on developing sustainable solutions and clean energy, in addition to raising awareness on the topic. Since 2017, Accor has joined Energy Observer in thinking about technologies that could shape the hotel of the future, with the aim of further reducing the effects of its operations on the environment and local communities.
Energy Observer: a unique vessel
Having started its journey in 2017, from her home port in Saint-Malo (France), the Energy Observer sails the seas for an odyssey around the world, scheduled to last until 2024. Energy Observer has already covered more than 50,000 nautical miles and visited more than 40 countries. Developed from a legendary multi-award-winning catamaran, she is an ecological transition laboratory designed to challenge the limits of zero-emission technologies. Hydrogen, solar, wind, hydraulic energy: all these types are being explored, tested and optimized to make clean energy a concrete reality and accessible to everyone.
As the first French ambassador of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations, her mission is to increase awareness with regard to ecological transition issues and explore solutions that prove that another energetic matrix for the future is possible.
A collaboration that reflects Accor’s pioneering spirit and ambition to lead the way & innovate to design a more sustainable hospitality for the future
Accor's union with Energy Observer shows a double concern: the initiative helps to intensify efforts to reduce the environmental footprint by adopting new energy sources; and allows learning from pioneering professionals, to innovate and find new concrete solutions for the industry.
“Increasingly, our hotels are striving to save energy and reduce operating costs and this partnership opens privileged access to new technologies. In tune with our Group’s open mindset, this illustrates the driving force of collaboration and represents a significant step for accelerating the energy transition in hospitality needed to build the Hotel of the Future”, says Antonietta Varlese, SVP of Communication and Sustainability at Accor Americas in the Premium, Midscale & Economy division.
