Accor, the world's leading hotel group, has obtained local sustainability certifications for more than 50 hotels in the Americas. The Group is committed to externally certifying its hotels with sustainability seals recognized by the GSTC (Global Sustainable Tourism Council). In Brazil, Colombia and Mexico the chosen certification is Green Key, while in Argentina and Chile we are supported by recognized local seals, Hoteles más Verdes (Greener Hotels) and Sello S (S Seal), respectively.
Each certified hotel passed an evaluation of sustainable practices, focusing mainly on four criteria: environmental management, water and energy savings, waste management and participation in the local community. Accor stands out in these areas thanks to its strong sustainability strategy.
S Seal S Certification Ceremony for Accor hotels in Chile
“ESG is no longer a trend, but a reality. 80% of travelers say that traveling more sustainably is important to them and the vast majority prefer to stay in hotels that have sustainable certifications. With this increased search for certified accommodations, Accor is ahead of the competition and driving business generation connected to its commitment to sustainability,” said Antonietta Varlese, SVP of Sustainability and Communication for Accor Americas Premium, Midscale & Economy division. “We strongly believe that tourism has the potential to drive economic and social development and we are dedicated to using our position to contribute to the development of the local communities where we operate,” she added.
Sustainability certifications represent more than a seal of approval, they are a reflection of Accor's commitment to environmental and social responsibility. By obtaining such certifications, hotels not only demonstrate concern for the planet, but also gain the trust of conscious consumers, who are increasingly concerned about the environmental impact of their travel. In addition, the adoption of sustainable practices reduces long-term operating costs and increases the attractiveness of hotels for investors seeking financial returns and positive impact.
Certification ceremony of Novotel Itu, the first resort in Brazil to be recognized by Green Key
This milestone of 50 certified hotels in the Americas was reached with the recent achievement of Green Key recognition by the Novotel Itu, the first resort in Brazil to receive the international seal. But this figure keeps increasing with the progress of certifications in other units, as was recently announced with the certification of the first hotel in the Northeast region of Brazil, the Mercure Salvador Rio Vermelho. Each time a property earns the distinction, it joins the global network of certified establishments, increasing its visibility and attractiveness to guests seeking sustainable lodging options.
The list of certified hotels in the Americas includes:
- Argentina: 7 hotels certified by Greenest Hotels
- Brazil: 10 hotels certified by Green Key
- Canada: 3 hotels certified by Green Key
- Chile: 9 hotels certified by S Seal
- Mexico: 22 hotels certified by Green Key
